XiMenDing Hua Xi Night Market
00:12
Here is the long await post of my Day 2 in Taiwan during my first trip there! Started the morning with some OOTD shot just right in front of our hotel! Drank some milk Lipton Tea to start my morning! Off we go for our breakfast hunt in XiMenDing!
Can you guess what we are having for breakfast?
Here we are at the oh-so-famous Ah Zhong Mian Xian place!
TA-DA! To be honest, I don't eat Mian Xian (thin rice noodle) normally but since this is so famous I decided to give it a try!
My verdict for it: MUST TRY! Taste really different!
Both of us shared a bowl of this because we are exploring a few food place! Such a good start to our morning!
Can you guess where we went next?
Next up! We went to the Modern Toilet Restaurant!
Oh! Did some shopping along the way! HAHAHAH!
Super unique theme, with a 'poop' statue. First thing first, this is a toilet themed restaurant. Therefore, even the way the dish serve is different. For those of you that cannot take it, I suggest you guys not to visit as it might be a little uncomfortable for you.
But for those of you that are curious, read away!
Menu for the restaurant! Fret not, they have menu in different languages! You can opt for the english menu if you can't read chinese characters!
Such a cool toilet bowl design, oh and yeap, that is how the seats are in the restaurants!
And I know you guys can't see but this is how the dining table look and it is actually a bathtub with a glass over. It is filled with papers that people wrote their wishes or thoughts on.
A corn soup as appetizer to start off our course!
For our main course, we ordered a mini steamboat set (beef) and a seafood baked rice. For drinks, we had red tea and honey milk tea.
And this is what my honey milk tea came in! You can actually purchase this for an extra NT 40 and bring it home! Although, this is a little impractical and its quite hard to drink from.
So our total meal add up to NT 690 which is approximately $29. Personally, I would not really recommend it because the food is not exceptionally nice, but the ambience is quite nice and unique which you can go and pay a visit. However, if I did not recall wrongly, they have a rule whereby each customer there have to order a main course or a certain amount of money because initially Susanna and I wanted to share a meal.
Didn't take a close up of the baked rice but it looks roughly like this~
Some desserts after our meal!
And of course I have to pen down my thoughts and wishes.
After which, we went for more dessert! If you guys didn't know yet, I LOVE MANGO! So we went to have mango shaved ice. It is super good, the mango is super fresh and the portion is huge for the two of us. LOVE IT!
After which, we head over for our karaoke session! The room is super spacious and they have a whole building that look super grand like some hotel for karaoke. SO COOL! It is so much cheaper to sing in Taiwan also, so I would definitely recommend it! The room is really 10 times bigger than what we have in Singapore and what's more important is THEY HAVE A TOILET IN EVERY ROOM! i think that is really convenient!
Look at my super yummy double chocolate!
After singing, we started craving for some local night street food, therefore we head to the nearest located night market which normally travellers do not often visit:
HuaXi Street Night Market (華西街觀光夜市)
Alight at LongShan Temple, I've specially circled the station to alight on the train map as shown below.
Once you alight, you will be able to find the night market as it is located near the famous Long Shan Temple. If you are taking a cab, you can either tell them the name straight away or the exact location will be:
108, Taiwan, 台北市萬華區
Alright, so the moment we stepped into the night market, we came upon this stall that have lots of people queueing, it's none other than the 葱抓饼!
Of course we have to queue to get one! I got the one with egg! Not the best that I've tried but somehow similar!
Next up, Susanna wanted to try the infamous pig blood (猪血糕)so she got one and I tried a small bite and I HATE IT. It is actually coated with peanut which I thought will be quite decent. Probably it is the way the person cooked it but I really doubt so. Won't recommend to try this but if you are adventurous unlike me, why not!
The night market is really small and we finish walking the whole place in about 5 to 10 minutes? It is actually located in between alleys and we didn't bother exploring the other parts because it is mainly filled with shops that sells snakes (YES, SNAKES!), crocodile soup and such!
We then went over to grab a seat while we ordered Taiwanese Oyster Pancake to share!
Service was fast, the serving was HUGE! Personally, I find it a tint too salty for me but other than that, it is not too bad~
Last but not least, before we end off the night, I grabbed a Tang Hu Lu (糖葫蘆), it is a traditional chinese snack of candid fruit such as cherry tomato or strawberry as seen in
the photo below!
My overall verdict for the night market is that, it is not a must visit, but if you happen to be nearby to visit the famous temple, you can drop by and visit it! Will not recommend tourists to visit the night market late at night! That place is kind of dangerous at night and along the train platform there will be homeless people and such sleeping around. Might be dangerous especially for female travellers!
Food is not exceptionally nice, so don't expect too much from it! I did not manage to visit the famous temple during this trip, but I did visit it during my second trip to Taiwan! Sorry for taking so long to collate the blog post, but do stay tune for it!
With Loves,
Joan Ting
